"POUR CRETIEL" MANUSCRIPT INSTRUCTIONAL MARK was created by agenteinrebus
The attached picture is of a cover dated 4 January 1769 posted from Lyon (DE LYON) to Paris ["at the [sign] of the Black Horse opposite St Paul [church] in the Rue St Antoine"]. However, there is a manuscript entry immediately above the DE LYON mark which says "pour cretiel". The letter is long, poor in punctuation and spelling hence 'cretiel' lacking the acute accent on the first 'e'? Having been advised that this suggests the cover was being 'directed' to Cretiel - a village then just south-east of Paris but now a suburb of the capital this raises the question of, if so, why? Can anyone offer further clarification? Grateful for any thoughts.
